Professional Presentations

Hill has given professional presentations at conferences with local, regional, national, and international scope, addressing a wide variety of issues in higher education.

Most recently, he presented "Current Legal Issues Pertaining to Private Universities" at the 14th Annual Texas Higher Education Law Conference with Lisa Kirkpatrick, the Dean of Students at St. Edward's University, on March 29, 2010. The focus of the talk was on legal and student judicial issues in the searches of residence halls.

The last two summers, Hill presented at the national conference of the Association for Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities. In the summer of 2009, he co-presented "A Spirituality of Work for Student Development Professionals" with Dr. Daniel Luby, the Tschoepe Chair of Homiletics from the School of Ministry at the University of Dallas. In the summer of 2008, he presented "Civic Engagement Grounded in Catholic Social Teaching" [which was the origins of the article "Catholic Social Teaching And Civic Engagement: Grounding Civic Praxis in Catholic Theory," Journal of Catholic Higher Education 27:1, 2008, 1-19, with Dr. Mary Lynne Hill.]

However, Hill's experience in higher education over the last twenty years, and his corresponding professional presentations, break down into three areas: (1) Service Learning; (2) Student Affairs; and (3) Enrollment Management. Here are some selected presentations:


SERVICE LEARNING

Hill presented to the Service Learning Faculty Fellows Program, which is a two-week intensive training for faculty offered at Our Lady of the Lake University. The faculty learn how to design or modify their classes to incorporate a service learning model. San Antonio, Texas, May 19, 2006.

Co-presented as part of a panel titled “Best Practices in Service Learning,” at the College & Community Mini-Conference: Partners in Service, sponsored by the Service-Learning Intercollegiate Collaborative. San Antonio, Texas, May 20, 2005.

Keynote speaker, Service Learning Faculty Luncheon, sponsored by the Center for Civic Engagement at The University of Texas at El Paso. The topic was how to engage faculty and students in the community through community-based teaching and learning in order to enhance student learning and promote civic engagement. El Paso, Texas, April 27, 2005.

Co-presented as part of a panel titled “A Model of Community Efforts,” at the Closing the Gaps: 21st Annual Recruitment and Retention Conference, sponsored by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The topic was how universities could build a greater sense of civic engagement by establishing programs with community partners. Austin, Texas, June 22, 2005.

Co-presented as part of a panel titled “Service Learning and Study Abroad” at the Conference on International Education Exchange. The presentation addressed the need for service learning to stress academic content in international programs. Santa Fe, New Mexico, November 12, 2004.

Co-presented on “Service Learning and Study Abroad” with Dr. Michael Woolf, President, Foundation for International Education, at the joint conference of the National Society for Experiential Education and the International Consortium for Experiential Learning. Miami, Florida, October 1, 2004.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

Co-presented a workshop at the national conference for the Association of Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASACCU), at Siena College, Albany, New York, July 29 - August 01, 2009. The title of the conference was “Cherishing our Traditions, Inspiring our Future,” and the presentation developed a model of Catholic spirituality for work by student development professionals.

Presented a workshop at the national conference for the Association of Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASACCU), at Villanova University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 23-26, 2008. The title of the conference was “Educating with Purpose: Transforming Hearts and Minds,” and the presentation covered civic engagement at Catholic Colleges and Universities.

Co-presenter, "Capital Crimes, Chew’d, Swallow’d and Digested: Advanced Problems in Student Affairs," presented at the Fall Conference of the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators. The topic was the legal and ethical treatment of students who commit crimes because of mental illness. Held in San Antonio, Texas, on October 9, 2001.

Co-presenter, "Legal Issues Involved in Taking Your Students Around the Block and Around the World," presented at the 1999 TACUSPA Summer Legal Conference with Judy M. Geelhoed. This was an overview of legal liability issues when working with students. San Antonio, Texas, on June 6 - 8, 1999.

Presenter, "Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974," presented at the 1998 TACUSPA Summer Legal Conference. This was an overview of FERPA (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99). The conference was in Abilene, Texas, on June 7 - 9, 1998.

Presenter, "The Civil Law Implications of Ex Corde Ecclesiae," at the 45th Annual Conference of the Education Law Association, Chicago, Illinois, November 4 - 6, 1999.
