2018 History of Philosophy Conference
Reason has gone by many names — λόγος, ratio, raison, Vernunft — and has appeared in a variety of forms in the history of philosophy. Reason has been the determining ground of existence; the intelligibility of the world; the specific difference between humans and other animals; the ruling part of the soul; a cognitive faculty; an instrument of legitimation; and has played many other roles as well.
The History of Philosophy Society's (HOPS) Fourth Annual Conference will explore these roles by surveying the forms in which reason has appeared in the history of philosophy and the way its forms have been contested. The Twenty-seventh Annual Conference will be held at the Hilton Palmer House Hotel in Chicago, Illinois, on March 1-4, 2018. The Hilton Palmer House Hotel features an indoor pool, three-level health club with an on-site spa, and beautiful guest rooms. When you stay at the Palmer House Hilton, you’re in the heart of downtown Chicago. And all of the many attractions that have put this area on the map and bring it to life are within a short stroll or cab ride. Among others, Millennium Park, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Theater, and the Magnificent Mile are all within a short distance of the hotel. The Twenty-seventh Annual Conference is open to Association members and nonmembers and welcomes persons from various disciplines and professions for discussion of common concerns in practical and professional ethics. The conference provides an opportunity to meet practitioners, professionals and scholars who share your interests. The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics was founded in 1991 to encourage interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching of high quality in practical and professional ethics by educators and practitioners who appreciate the practical-theoretical aspects of their subjects. The Association facilitates communication and joint ventures among centers, schools, colleges, business and nonprofit organizations and individuals concerned with the interdisciplinary study and teaching of practical and professional ethics. The Association is also the sponsor of the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl held at the Annual Conference, the 10 Regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowls, the International Two Year College Ethics Bowl and the National High School Ethics Bowl held under its auspices. I teach Philosophy and Ethics at St. Philip's College in San Antonio, Texas, where I have implemented the "Exploring Humanitarian Law" program developed by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The 2017 Advanced Seminar in International Humanitarian Law for University Lecturers and Researchers, was sponsored by the ICRC and the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, in Geneva, Switzerland. How does the current humanitarian landscape look like? What specific sources can be relied upon to interpret IHL provisions today? Where do the ICRC and the academic community stand in the current IHL debates? On which topics is academic research focusing? How can university lecturers teach IHL in an original, interactive and practice-oriented fashion? Organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, the 12th edition of this Advanced Seminar aims to enhance the capacity of lecturers and researchers to teach and research IHL contemporary issues, addressing both substantive and pedagogical aspects. Most of the seminar will take place at the ICRC conference centre, the Humanitarium, while some sessions will be organized at the Geneva Academy. Profile of candidates The seminar is addressed to academics holding a teaching/research position at a university or an academic institute. Candidates should have a very good knowledge of IHL and related fields of international law, and be motivated to improve and update their teaching skills in these subjects. As the seminar will be held in English, proficiency in this language is required. Content The seminar will address specific topics, such as recent trends in the classification of armed conflicts, foreign fighters, counterterrorism and IHL, challenges in the conduct of hostilities in today's armed conflicts, sexual violence and detention-related issues, implementation of IHL in courts, but also IHL teaching and research methodology. In the evening, participants will be invited to conferences reflecting on humanitarian issues currently faced in situations of armed conflicts and violence, as well as relating to the implementation of IHL. Several visits are also planned to help participants grasp the historical origins of IHL and how it is implemented in armed conflicts today. To get a better sense of the content and format of seminar sessions, interested candidates are welcome to watch videos from the 2015 edition here and listen to podcasts from the 2013 edition here. Format IHL substance, research and teaching methodology will be explored through panel discussions, debates, case studies, workshops, readings, research and visits. Sessions will be given by leading academics from Geneva and beyond, ICRC legal advisers and various experts. To foster interactions and debate amongst participants, sessions will be chaired by several speakers, who will provide different perspectives. Side events will also provide participants with informal opportunities for discussions with senior ICRC staff. Participants will be invited to keep in touch for further academic exchanges through a specific social media group. Cost and expenses A fee of 500 CHF is required as a contribution to the total cost of the seminar. This covers the lectures, seminar materials as well as lunch and dinner the first and last day of the seminar. Participants are expected to cover their travel costs to and from Geneva as well as accommodation during their stay. Application process and deadline Interested candidates should submit: • a completed application form • a curriculum vitae including a updated list of academic publications • a cover letter explaining the applicant's motivation and expectations • a letter of recommendation • a short abstract (max 150 words) about a humanitarian/legal issue or theme they are currently working on Completed applications should be sent electronically to the following email address: [email protected]. Any applications received after 30th June 2017 will not be considered by the selection committee. The number of participants is limited to 35. Candidates will be notified of the selection committee's decision by Monday, 31st July 2017. |

The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics 26th Annual APPE International Conference Thursday, February 23 – Sunday, February 26, 2017 Westin Park Central Hotel Dallas, Texas This call invites individuals from all disciplines and professions interested in advancing scholarship, teaching and a general understanding of practical and professional ethics. Submissions are invited on ethical issues in all fields including business, engineering, government, media, law, medicine, science and technology as well as interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary issues that cut across professions such as biomedical, educational, environmental, public health and research. The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) is a multidisciplinary, international organization advancing scholarship, education, and practice in practical and professional ethics. We facilitate and support collaboration among scholars and teachers, business and government leaders, and professionals from all areas concerned with the practical application of ethics and values. We invite submissions in the following categories: (1) Individual Presentations; (2) Panel Discussions; (3) Pedagogical Demonstrations; (4) Case Studies; (5) Posters; (6) Creative Arts (e.g., short play, poetry, or fiction); (7) Book submissions of recent works in ethics. In practice, one individual submission per person will be accepted. APPE will be using EasyChair for all submissions, except for Book submissions. Only authors submitting books will need to complete the submission form and email it to the APPE Office. All other submissions will go through the APPE EasyChair site. Cause or Cure – The Role of Religion in a Fear-Filled World
Tuesday, September 6, 2016 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM The Reverend Harold Good, an acknowledged peacemaker in Ireland and beyond, returns to UST to present his lecture titled, "Cause or Cure – The Role of Religion in a Fear-Filled World." This presentation will acknowledge and explore the hugely destructive role of religion that has become distorted, following religion through history to modern day. Rev. Good will encourage reflection well beyond personal faith to explore what each of us has to contribute to heal the hurts of a broken world. This lecture will focus on who we ALL are within the WHOLE people of God and as people of faith, from an ecumenical perspective, regardless of specific faith or belief. The former president of the Methodist Church in Ireland, Rev. Good, will acknowledge and explore the hugely destructive role of religion that has become distorted, following religion through history to modern day. Rev. Good will encourage reflection well beyond personal faith to explore what each of us has to contribute to heal the hurts of a broken world. |

2016 Ethics Bowl Summer Workshop
The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics Indiana University - Bloomington, Indiana Friday, June 24 through Sunday, June 26, 2016 The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics is hosting the 2016 Ethics Bowl Summer Workshop at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. The workshop will hold sessions pertaining to the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, the Two-Year College Ethics Bowl, and the National High School Ethics Bowl, in addition to sessions on coaching, judging, student voices, the future of the bowl, and organizing regional competitions, etc. The main workshop will occur on Saturday and Sunday, beginning Saturday morning. The seventh annual University of Dallas Ministry Conference was held October 24-26, 2013 at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center Dallas. Sponsored by the Diocese of Dallas and the University of Dallas, the 2013 conference brought together Catholic faithful from the diocese and the surrounding area to learn, pray, and Walk Together in Faith. The event featured two keynote addresses, one in English and one in Spanish, on Friday, and several plenary addressed in both languages on Saturday. It featured session tracks specifically designed for teachers, catechists, and general Catholic audiences, including talks on faith, parenting, and social justice. Sessions were offered in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese, and the conference hosted over 100 exhibitors, a liturgical art display, musical performances by well-known and up-and-coming Catholic artists, and several prayer services and a Conference Mass.
