At Northwest Vista College, I served on the International Education Committee, which among other activities, sponsors the annual International Education Week. In November of 2011, the committee organized 15 different events, from a march of flags to lectures to a celebration of different cultural foods, clothing, music and dance. For this project, the Committee as a whole was recognized for their work this year with the 2012 NVC Award for Service.

I also served on the Peace and Conflict Studies Committee. During the fall of 2012, members of this committee are working to integrate into their courses the Exploring Humanitarian Law Program EHL) developed by the American Red Cross. NVC is one of the first colleges to pilot this program. For their efforts to lead this innovative new project, both Migdalia Garcia and Carlos Lopez were recognized at the start of this academic year with the annual 2012 NVC Award for Bright Ideas.

In the fall of 2011, Dr. Charles Hinkley suggested that we begin a sequence of informal lunch conversations as a way to engage our students outside of the classroom. His idea, the weekly series “Doing Ethics: Brown Bag Lunch Conversations about Ethics,” began in February and ran through April 2012. The conversations were led by NVC students & faculty members from several disciplines across campus, such as Humanities, Speech, Philosophy and Chemistry.
