Attended, Adjudicating Sexual Assault Workshop, sponsored byNational Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). This in-depth workshop featured presenters such as Don Gehring, of Bowling Green University, who spoke on "Institutional Liability," and Janine D’Anniballe, of the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault, who conducted a "Victims’ Advocate Session." Held at the Melrose Hotel, in Dallas, Texas, between December 2-4, 1999.
Attended, The Risk Management Lecture, by Ron Kuhlman, sponsored by the Student Life Office at St. Mary’s University. The lecture focused on how alcohol is interrelated with issues of sexual assault, hazing, and other forms of violence on college campuses. The event was held at St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, Texas, on March 29, 1999.
Attended, Nonimmigrant Student Advisement Professional Development Program, sponsored by One World Learning Service, Inc. (OWLS) and St. Mary's University. The training covered the details of handling international students, such as issuing I-20 forms, immigration statuses and travel visas, travel and re-entry, and employment issues. The workshop, presented by Bill O’Connell, a former INS officer and foreign student advisor, was held at St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas, between July 15 - 17, 1998.
Attended, Assessment in Student Affairs Retreat, a division-wide retreat for the members of the St. Mary’s University Student Development Council. This event was sponsored by the Student Development Assessment Committee, and was focused on using the strategies from Assessment in Student Affairs: A Guide for Practitioners, by M. Lee Upcraft and John H. Schuh (1996). This retreat established the theoretical foundation for building the division’s assessment plan. The event was held at Our Lady of the Pillar Convent, San Antonio, Texas, on April 22, 1998.
Attended, The Second Annual Texas Higher Education Law Conference, sponsored by the University of North Texas. The conference consisted of a number of general lectures and small group sessions which discussed a variety of legal topics confronting private and public universities. Topics included: crisis management, FERPA, Title IX issues, interacting with violent students and employees, and freedom of speech issues. The conference was held at the University of North Texas, in Denton, Texas, between March 2-3, 1998.
Attended, Sexual Harassment Training Session, conducted by Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld LLP, and sponsored by the Human Resources Department at St. Mary’s University. The presentation covered the current state of the law, proscribed conduct, and the elements of both "quid pro quo" and "hostile environment" harassment. The event was held at St. Mary’s University, in San Antonio, Texas, on March 3, 1998.
Attended, Texas Alcoholic Beverages Commission Compliance Presentation, by Lt. Christina Guerra of the Texas Alcoholic Beverages Commission. The session was sponsored by St. Mary’s Student Life Office, and was a seminar designed to bring together different departments and constituencies from around campus to help coordinate university policies and ensure compliance with TABC regulations. The event was held at St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, Texas, on February 25, 1998.
Attended, 1998 Southern Greek Leadership Conference, the annual, regional conference attended by members of the Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Council, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. As the St. Mary’s University Advisor to the Interfraternity Council, I attended and supervised ten students. The conference was held in Dallas, Texas, between February 6-7, 1998.
Attended, Campus Confidentiality on Trial: An Open or Closed Case, a national teleconference designed to explore legal issues and trends in student judicial affairs, and presented by the Bowling Green State University Department of Higher Education and Student Affairs and WBGU-TV. I attended at the "TAMU Studios" of Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, on November 14, 1997.
Attended, The U.S. Department of Education 1997 National Meeting on Alcohol, Other Drugs and Violence Prevention in Higher Education. The meeting was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, Safe and Drug Free School Programs (SDFSP), St. Mary's University, and the Texas Department of Health. This event was held in San Antonio, Texas, between September 17-20, 1997.
